However, there are some things to get around. USB Garmin on GNU/Linux - Garmin GPS devices with USB support are generally well‐supported on GNU/Linux systems. * By Garmin: Open Source Linux Software for Our Devices (archives are in the format of bzip2-compressed tarballs, see below for instructions) Here are some web links that might interest you: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:andreas-diesner. Information is at these websites: Garmin Plugin : Andreas Diesner. Just search for "GPS", or "gps garmin", etc. There is available a browser plugin that has the same interface as the official Garmin Communicator Plugin and gives you the possibility to access your Garmin device with your browser under linux. There are numerous GPS programs in the current software repositories, like your Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) which may help with this. Obviously, Using VirtualBox with Windows installed as a "virtual machine" in it will let you do this.ģ. Like "Mute Ant" said, you may want to use something newer that "Win XP" in your "Wine" settings, although even "Win XP" Wine settings should work.Ģ. If you have an up to date version of "Wine", you can probably get this Garmin software to work with it. I just read your post and the good & funny (re: Reorx) replies to it.ġ. Or of course there could be a third way, a way of using my lovely Linux Mint operating system to download and update my Garmin sat-nav? Re: Garmin Communicator Plugin on Linux Reply 1 on: 16 July, 2011, 08:21:12 pm I haven't tried it but think that the windows version of Firefox works on wine and you can use the normal Garmin Communicator plugin. So my dilemma is do I bite the bullet and buy a cheap and nasty version of Windows whatever off amazon for a fiver and create a dual boot system (hiss booo!!) or do I spend a lot of money on a new sat-nav (there's nothing wrong with what I have). It throws up an error message telling me to update my OS from XP with a link to buy whatever is their latest version. Garmin don't have a Linux version of their Garmin Express software that they insist on being used to download any updates. But now I have a Linux OS I've hit a problem. When I had a Windows OS there was no problem in updating each year using Garmins own software. However I have a Garmin Nuvi sat-nav with lifetime updates. I use a Linux OS only, no Windows dual boot, and I'm really happy using Linux Mint and not using Windows. There's probably a really simple fix for this that I've completely overlooked, but here's my dilemma anyway. As requested here's my system info: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit, Version 2.2.16
